American Socialism?

Today has so far been an interesting day to say the least. I woke up this morning to my first class being canceled, so I flipped on the TV, and there was Barack Obama being questioned by a plumber from Ohio.

Plumber: “You’re going to raise our taxes, aren’t you?!

Obama: “I like to think of it more as spreading the wealth around, you know, to help the people behind you.”

Say what? Eh, excuse me, Mr. Obama, sir, but this is America. We are not socialists. We don’t believe or accept the idea of forcefully taking one person’s money and freely giving to another who may or may not have contributed anything in taxes (1/3 of Americans do not pay any income taxes at all).

Folks, this is scary. This is what we’ve been talking about all along, but Mr. Obama has been cleverly disguising his true intentions to the point where we whistle blowers became “radicals” and “fear mongers”. I want you to know that it doesn’t matter what “That One” says, the truth is still the truth.

Here’s another piece of truth:

Redefinition of the word doesn't change the truthfulness of the idea.

Redefinition of a word to fit a new idea doesn't make the new idea good or truthful.

This comes from an opinion article in today’s Wall Street Journal entitled “Obama’s 95% Illusion“. It describes how utterly untruthful Obama’s proposal for tax cuts/no tax increases (depending on when you ask him) for 95% of working families/Americans (again, depending on when you ask him) is. Instead of truly cutting taxes, like John McCain promises, Obama simply provides what he calls “tax cuts,” which according to economists are really “tax credits”. Honestly, I still don’t see how anyone can even call them that! Obama’s plan calls for multiple sums of money to be dispensed, freely, to a supposed “95% of working families/Americans”, when a third of the population doesn’t even pay income taxes!

Now, how does that work? Well, according to the Wall Street Journal, it’s simple. Obama will simply give out “free money” that he raises by taxing the “rich” even more heavily than they already are! Now, I know that idea sounds good, but think of it this way: You work your entire life at your small, family-owned business, but your business has an income of more than US$250,000 a year. Well, sorry, your sometimes 30% tax rates just went up, and all of that hard-earned money is going to someone who never worked a day for any of it.

We have a term for it, one that’s generally used in conjunction with Socialist states. It’s called wealth redistribution, and it’s wrong.

Friends, it’s simply not fair.

If you’re still not convinced, consider this: You child is on the honor roll at his or her school because he or she works two to four hours every night reading, studying, and doing homework. He or she does his or her best to learn the material, and you both have spent many sleepless nights trying to figure out how to graph absolute value functions and conjugate irregular Spanish verbs. Now, there’s also another student at your child’s school, who comes from another normal family, but this student does not apply him/herself whatsoever. He or she goes out to party and drink and lies on the couch all day; many days he or she sleeps through all of his or her classes. Yet, the school board decides that the idea of “grades” and “competition” are damaging to children, so they decide to even things out a bit. So, in pursuit of fairness, they strip your child of half of his or her GPA and award it to the aforementioned slob from down the street. Your child comes home in tears and never commits him/herself to anything ever again.

Besides socialism destroying personal dignity and a respect for personal property, it destroys a person’s motivation, both for those who normally would do well and those who are true slobs. The dedicated do not receive the benefits of their hard work, and the sloths don’t have to work and are still taken care of.

These are the kinds of things awaiting us in an Obama Presidency.  If this is the kind of mayhem that excites you, by all means move to Cuba or some other Socialist or Communist state. I know you thought I was going to say, “…vote for Obama”, but America is not the place for Marxism (and neither is the rest of the world, for that matter). We are a nation of democracy and free-market ideals, and I intend to help keep it that way. That’s why I’m voting for McCain-Palin, and I hope you are, too.
